Healthcare providers have an important role in helping patients to quit using tobacco and nicotine products.

50% (17/34) of surveyed healthcare providers in Snohomish County always screen patients for tobacco and nicotine use at every visit. This is the best opportunity to provide encouragement and the tools they need to quit for good.

Healthcare providers can assist patients in utilizing evidence-based cessation methods like counseling and medications (such as prescription varenicline and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)), which are more effective than quitting without help.
Referrals can be made to the Washington State Quitline (1-800-QUITNOW), where patients may be able to access free counseling along with up to a 2-week supply of NRT.

A survey was conducted with healthcare providers at Snohomish County Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) to identify gaps and barriers to cessation treatment, and recommendations for programmatic solutions are outlined.
