[ARCHIVED] Vaping-associated lung injury in Snohomish County

Person using vapor device

Four cases of vaping-associated lung injury have been reported in Snohomish County since April 2019.

That's part of a statewide total of 19 cases as of the end of November. Nationwide, more than 2,200 cases have been reported, including 48 deaths.

Symptoms include coughing, difficulty breathing, chest pain, fever, nausea or fatigue. Anyone who uses vapor devices and experiences those symptoms should seek medical attention.

Investigation is ongoing to determine the cause(s). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified a chemical of concern called vitamin E acetate, but there is not enough evidence to rule out other potential contributing chemicals.

Snohomish County cases include:

  • An adolescent female (11-19 years old) who reported using flavored nicotine products.
  • A man in his 30s who reported using nicotine-free, flavored e-juice.
  • A woman in her 40s who reported vaping both flavored nicotine and THC products.
  • A woman in her 20s who reported vaping products that were purchased from a legal retailer.
